Answer

Is carrageenan bad for you?

Short answer

The evidence most often cited against carrageenan used degraded carrageenan, also called poligeenan, which is not permitted in food and is used in animal studies specifically because it induces inflammation. Food-grade carrageenan is a different, higher molecular weight substance, and the honest position on it is unresolved rather than damning.

Two substances, one name

  • Carrageenan (E407) is extracted from red seaweed and used to thicken and stabilise — plant milks, cream, deli meat, wet pet food
  • Degraded carrageenan, or poligeenan, is produced by acid treatment at high temperature; it is not a permitted food additive
  • Laboratory work uses the degraded form to induce inflammation on purpose — it is a standard model, not an accident
  • The open question is whether digestion converts a meaningful share of food-grade carrageenan into something closer to the degraded form

Why the question stays open

Both JECFA and EFSA have reviewed carrageenan and kept it permitted. EFSA's 2018 review declined to confirm its use in infant formula without more data, which is a narrower and more specific reservation than the internet version of the story.

In 2016 the US National Organic Standards Board voted to remove carrageenan from the list of substances allowed in organic food; the USDA did not follow that recommendation. That episode is where much of the public argument comes from, and it was a decision about organic certification rather than a safety ruling.

Why our pet scanner flags it and the food scanner does not

Olive Detective flags carrageenan in pet food and not in human food, which looks inconsistent until you look at the exposure. Wet pet food is a far larger share of a single animal's total diet than any one carrageenan-containing product is of a person's, and it is often eaten twice a day for years from the same formulation.

That is a precautionary judgement about dose and repetition, not a claim that the ingredient behaves differently in a cat. Where the evidence is unresolved, the concentrated exposure is the one worth flagging.

Frequently asked questions

Is carrageenan natural?
It is extracted from seaweed, so yes in origin. Natural origin is not an argument about safety in either direction, which is why our scoring does not treat it as one.
Should I avoid carrageenan if I have IBS or IBD?
Some people report symptom improvement after cutting it, and the evidence to support or refute that is not there. That makes it a reasonable personal experiment and a question for a clinician, not something a scanner can answer.
What replaces carrageenan in plant milks?
Gellan gum, locust bean gum, guar gum or nothing at all — several brands moved away from carrageenan after the organic-board vote, which is why label-reading now finds it less often than it did.
